DAM EDUCATION

CERTIFICATE IN XML AND RDF-BASED SYSTEMS (2015)

Library Juice Academy | Instructor: Dr. Robert Chavez
Introduction to XML
This course provides an introduction to XML and the basic tools for working with XML documents. Topics included XML Document Type Definitions (DTDs), XML Schemas, and XPath, as well as an introduction to more advanced topics including XSL stylesheets and the XML query language, XQuery. Students also explore several Library of Congress XML markup standards including Dublin Core, MARCXML, and MODS.
Transforming and Querying XML with XSLT and XQuery
An introduction to XSLT and XQuery, including hands-on basic coding. Topics included: XSL language fundamentals, how to write basic XSL transformations, XQuery fundamentals, how to write basic XQueries, and understanding the differences between XSL and XQuery. Students learned how to write code to transform XML documents into other formats (for example, (X)HTML5, RSS, etc.), to search XML documents and document sets, and to extract metadata from XML documents.
Introduction to the Semantic Web
This course provides an introduction to semantic web standards (RDF, RDFa, taxonomies/OWL, SKOS) and their application. In addition, the course explores how to create semantic models that could be used to link/share different types of resources, and how basic ontologies (using the Web Ontology Language) are created.
RDFa1.1 (RDFa and RDFa Lite) and RSS
This course provides an introduction to RDFa as a method for publishing Linked Data within HTML documents that can be utilized by search engines and information systems. Topics include: How RDFa applies RDF principles, RDFa Lite , RDFa Core, and RSS technologies.
Ontologies and Linked Data
This course is an expansion of the Introduction to the Semantic Web course. This course focused in more detail on SKOS, OWL, MADs/METS/MODS, and the Open Linked Data movement. Also discussed were strategies for creating taxonomies and ontologies, and hands-on ontology creation with Open Source tools, such as Protégé.
The SPARQL semantic query language and protocol - the Semantic Web in action
This course focused on the SPARQL query language, as well as the concept of the semantic 'triple' and RDF triplestores. One of the primary goals of this course was for the student to understand how semantic data is used, accessed, and disseminated on the web.

Topics included: fundamentals of SPARQL, how to write SPARQL queries against RDF tripe stores and interact with existing triple stores, and how SPARQL is used to access, disseminate, and exchange semantic data on the web. Students explored working open access examples of semantic data searches, triplestore, and semantic interfaces on the web.

POST-MASTER'S CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL SERVICES  (2015)

San José State University | School of Information | San José, CA
Seminar in Contemporary Issues: Metadata
Instructor: Dr. Mary Bolin

This course will allow students to deepen their knowledge of organization of information, digital libraries and museums, institutional repositories, content management, and information architecture. Includes metadata creation, management, and dissemination, especially for digital libraries. Topics covered include:
  • Metadata terminology, content and encoding schemes,
  • Applications of metadata standards for different purposes and environments, especially for digital libraries, museums, and other cultural heritage and scholarly digital repositories
  • Various approaches to metadata creation, storage, management, and dissemination, including harvesting and aggregating.
Vocabulary Design
Instructor: Ali Shiri

The course is designed to explore and examine the principles and practice of indexing, abstracting, thesaurus construction, web-based application of thesauri and other types of knowledge organization systems and social organization of information.
Database Design and Management
Instructor:
Dr. Geoffrey Liu

This course covers the design and implementation of relational databases with web access for database-driven Web applications. Learn about database management systems, database administration, SQL database querying, and identify management and social issues such as database security and privacy.
Digital Asset Management
Instructor: John Horodyski

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, terminology, practice and application of digital asset management in the public and private sector. Topics include:
  • Metadata
  • Workflow
  • Taxonomy
  • Data security
